Michelangelo

by David Ahlman

Long hath the Chiseler
Been chiseling me—
Cutting my corners,
Shaving my chinks,
Chipping my childness,
Splitting my seems,
Polishing my roughness,
Shaping my sling,
Bashing my blunders,
Sanding my grains,
Carving my hands,
Cleaning my stains,
Cracking my marble,
Smashing my stone,
Making me mastered,
Hammering me whole—
Long hath the Chiseler
Been chiseling me
Into His David:

Strong, naked, and clean.
